HAND BLOWN GLASS

Tonalá, Jalisco

Seeing a glass blowing workshop in action is magical. Day by day, artisans enter a kind of spider web of work where the flow of the pieces and their processes moves them all. Each piece involves the work of at least 3 artisans.

The glass furnaces are high temperature, where the glass is melted and then collected with a giant metal straw and blown. The craftsmen stand on a step and the glass with the straw remains at the bottom, it is inserted into a type of mold that, when the glass is blown, fills it and takes its shape. Then the piece goes to a master craftsman who finishes it and polishes the shape with metal tweezers. When the piece is ready, it is placed in an oven where it will last a minimum of 8 hours to achieve temperature stability and prevent it from cracking.

This technique, we dare to say, is one of the most used in Mexico. Some of the pieces such as horses, glasses, vases, plates and lamps can be seen in Mexican homes, restaurants and hotels.

LIMITATION

  • For the piece to be exact, a mold must be made, which has an extra cost.
  • There are only the following glass colors that we work with: lemon green, dark green, amethyst, cobalt blue, aquamarine blue, amber and transparent. The rest of the colors are achieved with an external painting that we do not recommend for food.
  • Although certain tones or shapes of decoration are chosen, each design is different since it depends on each mixture that comes out of the glass container. Each piece is unique.
  • Exact measurements and capacities can be achieved with a steel mold. This is quoted separately.
  • The glass used is recycled so a 100% transparent tone cannot be achieved.
  • Blown glass by its nature has bubbles inside.

TREATMENT

  • The care that must be taken with any glass.
