COPPER

Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacán

Santa María del Cobre is part of the famous “Ruta de Quiroga”. During his visit, Vasco de Quiroga had a great influence in achieving to turn copper into an economic activity in Santa Clara.

Copper arrives either crushed or in cable form, then it is melted in pots at high temperatures. When the copper is melted, small discs are created to be then pressed on a lathe. With the friction, the piece starts to heat up and that is when the artisans hands begin to do the magic. With the help of clamps and hammers, artisans begin to “pull”, in order to give the copper piece the form and size wanted.

The artisan gradually, achieves to give the disc the form of a cup, or pot, with the help of molds and references. The piece is heated several times to maintain the right temperature needed for the hand “molding” of it. Once the copper piece is cold, it is hammered for decoration purposes. With small and constant hits, patterns are formed according to what the artisan decides to achieve. After the piece is finished, it is the sunken in a liquid that helps unify its color, to then do the final polish (if needed).
