Jalisco Black Clay
Tonalá, Jalisco
The BLACK CLAY FROM JALISCO is elaborated by only one family, Familia Mateos. Almost an extinct technique. Pablo and Eusebio come from an artesian family, their father dedicated himself to burnished clay and they innovated by giving it a dark touch, similar to the Oaxaca black clay. They continue using the traditional method for creating the piece by hand and with the use of “mushroom” molds and the tortilla clay. This Black Clay technique is for decorative uses only, since it can’t get wet or else the clay unravels. It is baked twice and decorated by hand with small knives, simulating prehistoric decorations, then placed in the oven with eucalyptus leaves. The smoke paints the pieces black in a uniform and unique way. Each decoration is different and reflects Pablo or Eusebio’s inspiration.
